Where to begin with this little recipe. It had so much potential that went up in smoke just like the glaze that burned all over the pan (thank goodness I put down foil). We found this one off of Whole Foods. Very disappointing. The day had started out with big plans to go check out this huge farmers market that we had never been to in our area. Well that part went off without a hitch - we got a lot of splendid local veggies on the cheap and even sprung for some of that grass-fed pork summer sausage and a couple of pork chops that we could make for dinner (you sure do pay a pretty penny for that stuff!). That's when we found that recipe above. Picked it out mainly cause it looked easy and we had everything it called for. Well part of this recipe failure was my fault for not cooking the pork long enough (should've used a meat thermometer). But the problem was that the glaze did not accurately caramelize and stay atop the pork instead it ran off onto the pan and when I put the meat back in to finish cooking it (after we had sat down and began eating have you) the glaze burned, smoked, set off the fire alarm and used every last bit of my patience. Luckily we made a great corn topping which I will tell you about next post. That and double fudge brownie brought me back to calmness. I guess it was just one of those days. We hope you all had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend. Jessi and I are uber busy we're now down to 18 days away from out wedding and 19 days from Antigua!
On a random note: Here's a pic from a great hike we took last weekend up in Blowing Rock, NC along the Ridge Top Trail off the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Ingredients
- Nonstick cooking spray
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons orange Juice
- 1 tablespoon finely grated fresh ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 4 (1-inch thick) bone-in, center-cut pork chops
Directions
- Arrange oven rack about 6 inches from heating element and preheat broiler. Line a large baking sheet with foil and spray with nonstick cooking spray; set aside.
- In a small bowl, whisk together sugar, orange juice, ginger and salt. Arrange pork chops on prepared baking sheet in a single layer, spacing them a few inches apart. Spread half of the glaze over the tops of the pork chops and broil until golden and just crisp, 6 to 8 minutes.
- Carefully flip pork chops and spread remaining glaze over the tops. Return to oven and broil until just golden and crisp on the second side and cooked through, 6 to 8 minutes more. Transfer to plates and serve.

Hmmmm. That sucks! I hate it when things don't go according to plan. Somehow when it comes to sugar and fire, I fail miserably. Need a caramel? I'm NOT your girl. Adam usually has to handle things like that because my attempts at anything with hot sugar results in fire. I wonder if you marinated them in orange olive oil & ginger (or orange infused) and then just brushed them with brown sugar before broiling would work? Hope all is well with you guys!
bookmarked this..I'm going to do this...
Such an amazing photo! Thanks for sharing it. Btw, I want that pork on my table right away! Looks so yummy. hmm..mm... Hope you're having a wonderful day!
Regards, Kristy
um... the picture looks good...
next time for sure
burnt glaze--boo! thank heavens you had some tasty topping and delightful dessert to redeem the meal--i'll be looking forward to those recipes. :)
The pork looks so succulent! Love the corn as side dish!
At least now I know to stay away from this! I would have definitely thought to make it...it sounds like it would be such a winning recipe!
Oh! your pork chops looks so yummie, love the idea of using orange juice to glaze, I always like it fruity. Great pictures!
Pork chop looks great, but I am eying the corn you cut on the 'slide' in the back! I am ready for corn season, and need to get my pork on soon too!
Good grief! All those problems, but I have to tell you the photo is mouth-watering!
The worst is when everything goes to shit and then the fire alarm goes off. Whatever you went through that porkchop looks pretty tasty. Looking forward to the corn topping though and thanks goodness for double chocolate brownies!
Antigua...sounds wonderful...
Maybe the glaze and the chop were having an argument. You can't force people to like each other.
The photo belies the difficulty though!
